Google [has announced that by June 2024 Chrome will be fully transitioned to **Manifest v3**](https://developer.chrome.com/en/blog/resuming-the-transition-to-mv3/), which will restrict the capabilities of extensions, **especially ad and tracker blockers** such as [uBlock Origin](https://ublockorigin.com/). These types of extensions work thanks to the Web Request API which will be replaced by the Declarative Net Request API which is much more limited than its predecessor, essentially making ad and tracker blockers **utterly useless**.

Google Chrome retains around **66% of the global web browser market**, Google also has some of the **most popular online platforms and software** like their search engine, YouTube, AdSense, Maps, Gmail, Android and even the open source Chromium browser used as a base by many browsers such as Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi, which means that any significant change that Google does to Chromium could end up downstream to these forks as well. By keeping to use their products, **you're encouraging them to tyrannize the internet**, a place that should be platform agnostic and encourage free exchange of ideas and creations. I don't mean to offend, I'm just saying you should seriously consider switching to the many alternatives so that you don't contribute to Google's monopoly.

### Cromite (Android)
![The Cromite logo](../img/sw/cromite.png)
This is a fork of the now unmaintained [Bromite browser](https://bromite.org/), based on Chromium obviously, and has all the good stuff that Bromite had, like built-in ad blocking, the absence of any Google dependencies or blobs, privacy enhancements from other projects (such as GrapheneOS, Ungoogled Chromium and Brave), etc. This is also supported by FFUpdater.

OpenSnitch is a firewall application, based on nftables, that does logging, app rules and also comes up with dialogs asking if you want to allow specific apps and processes from accessing the network. It's useful for blocking ads and trackers that connect to your browsers or other applications, for instance it helped me block Telegram Desktop's Google analytics). It has a few annoyances like it being a bit hard to use, having excessive permission dialogs, especially when you install it for the first time or when you use command line programs, and the fact that I often get at login some notifications about missing libraries or something (maybe just an Arch issue, I should do more testing on other distros as well).

### 4get (Web)
![The default 4get banner (the developer of this is kinda memey)](../img/sw/4get.png)
4get is a meta-search engine, similar to [SearXNG](https://docs.searxng.org/) or [LibreY](https://github.com/Ahwxorg/librey/), which does not track you and takes results from other search engines while removing any tracking parameters from them. It's minimalistic, lightweight and makes very little use of Javascript, it's got a handy image viewer where you can easily zoom with your scroll wheel or switch between pictures by clicking on them while they're in the background. Check out some public instances [here](https://4get.ca/instances).

### LibreSprite (Windows, macOS, Linux)
![The LibreSprite logo](../img/sw/libresprite.png)
This is a fork of [Aseprite](https://aseprite.org/) with an actually free (as in freedom) license (from a custom "source available" EULA to the GPLv2). It's a cute pixel art, sprite and animation software with a very pixelated UI and tools for multiple sprite editing, patterns, textures, palettes and more. If you've used Aseprite before, this won't feel any different, it's literally the same application.
